Although Google+ hasn’t been around for that long, it’s already established an important position in the social network club. Currently, it surpassed Twitter and now represents the second most popular social network website, obviously after Facebook.

According to our source, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter are the most used social platforms. Apparently, Google+ has the strongest growth across the 31 globally monitored markets at 40%, while Facebook came in second with 33%.

In terms of actual active users, Facebook leads with 693 million active users, while Google+ has 343 million. Twitter and Youtube share the third place, rocking about 300 million active users each.

The interesting part (although not too surprising) is that the five social networks that ranked from fifth to ninth are only available in China (Qzone, Sina Weibo, Tencent, Youku and Tudou). China is clearly a huge market, but the study shows that these local networks are rapidly losing market share, some of them even managed to lose half their members in 2012. The business-oriented Linkedin comes in at 10th place.

Over at Extragsm, we’re trying to stay as active as possible on as many social networks. You can keep up with the latest news by liking us on Facebook, or following us on Google+, Twitter and Pinterest.
