Sony confirms talks with Microsoft to develop Windows Phones

Sony has a long and standing relationship with Microsoft, through the VAIO brand of Windows computers, which is a well established brand name.

The good news is that the collaboration will apparently expand in the direction of Windows Phone smartphones, as Sony's Mobile head for Europe, Pierre Perron declared himself.

Back in the days of Sony Ericsson, the company was involved with Windows Mobile, launching the first Xperia handset - the popular X1 slide-out QWERTY phone.

Perron believes that making smartphones for just one OS - even though it's the most widely adopted one - does not represent a viable position in the long haul, and we tend to agree with him.

The Sony official also felt the need to add that his company enjoys "a good collaboration with Google", but it simply wants to expand its portfolio on other OSes.

There still aren't any specifics regarding launch dates or even if the talks are in final stages, but everything look promising at this point.
