Not so long ago, ZTE proclaimed their ambitions of selling 100 million handsets annually by 2015, and everyone laughed. Well, although they're not quite there yet, the Chinese company is really making a name for itself in the smartphone game.

ZTE is now the 5th largest smartphone manufacturer in the world

During Q2 of this year, ZTE shipped 8 million smartphones, most of them in the native China. This translates in a global market share of 5.2%, which makes them the 5th largest smartphone supplier in the world, breathing heavily in the neck of HTC and Nokia.

Furthermore, ever since last year, ZTE retained their 4th rank as far as overall mobile devices are concerned - this includes smartphones and featurephones. Clearly, Samsung and Apple have nothing to worry about, but ZTE's plan to ship 100 million handsets doesn't make anyone laugh anymore.
